Amyl & The Sniffers

Amyl and The Sniffers are an internationally acclaimed Australian rock band formed in Melbourne in 2016 by housemates Amy Taylor (vocals), Bryce Wilson (drums), and Dec Mehrtens (guitar). Their first EP, Giddy Up, was written, recorded and released in just 12 hours. They followed it up with Big Attraction in 2017, featuring standout tracks like I’m Not A Loser and Westgate.

Known early on for their explosive live energy, Amyl and The Sniffers quickly built a formidable reputation in Melbourne before breaking out internationally. Their 2018 appearance at The Great Escape in the UK marked a major turning point, attracting industry attention and resulting in record deals with Rough Trade Records (UK) and ATO Records (US). Their 2019 SXSW set was named one of Rolling Stone’s best, leading to sold-out tours across the UK, US, and Australia, and major festival slots at Glastonbury, Primavera, Roskilde and All Points East. That year, they also won the $30,000 Levi’s Prize and were nominated as Best New Act at the Q Awards.

Their self-titled debut album, released in 2019, topped the Australian vinyl chart and earned the band an ARIA Award for Best Rock Album. It also received widespread critical acclaim and coverage from media outlets including MOJO, The Guardian, Thrasher, Vogue and Vice. The album was shortlisted for the Australian Music Prize and named Album of the Week on 3RRR, FBi, and Double J.

In late 2020, the band returned to the studio with producer Dan Luscombe to record their second album Comfort To Me, which was mixed by Nick Launay and mastered by Bernie Grundman. Released in 2021, the album debuted at #2 on the ARIA Album Chart, and reached #21 on the UK Albums Chart and #18 on the Billboard Album Sales Chart. It was Triple J’s Feature Album, BBC6 Album of the Day, and appeared on numerous ‘Best of 2021’ lists, including Rolling Stone, FADER, and Consequence.

The band resumed live shows in 2022 with a 30,000-capacity support slot for Foo Fighters in Melbourne. That year included their debut at Coachella, a sold-out North American tour, and high-profile UK and EU dates, including Brixton Academy, Wide Awake, Glastonbury and Primavera. They also toured stadiums across Europe with Green Day, Weezer, and Fall Out Boy.

By 2023, Amyl and The Sniffers had sold out their first Mexico tour and supported The Smashing Pumpkins and Jane’s Addiction in Australia. Their European summer run included major slots at Green Man, Rock en Seine, All Points East and Electric Picnic, followed by debut shows in Japan and India.

In May 2024, the band released U Should Not Be Doing That, a new single that debuted as BBC1’s Hottest Record in the World and reached over 12 million Spotify streams. This was followed by the announcement of their third studio album Cartoon Darkness, released in October 2024. Produced by Nick Launay at Foo Fighters’ 606 Studio in LA, the album debuted at #2 on the ARIA Albums Chart and entered the Billboard Top 200 for the first time. Singles Chewing Gum, Big Dreams, and Jerkin’ (which reached #32 in the Triple J Hottest 100) gained millions of streams and strong global radio support.

Cartoon Darkness was met with critical acclaim, earning spots on ‘Best of 2024’ lists from BBC Radio 6, MOJO, The Guardian, NME, PASTE and more. It was nominated for the Australian Music Prize and the J Award for Album of the Year, and won Best LP/EP and Best Live Act at the 2025 Rolling Stone Australia Awards.

Promoting the album, the band performed on Later…with Jools Holland, The Last Leg, and multiple BBC live sessions, while also featuring in global press such as LA Weekly, The Guardian, The Age, Interview, PAPER, and on the covers of Kerrang!, Consequence, Brooklyn Vegan, The Music, and others.

In 2025, Amyl and The Sniffers reached a new career peak, receiving their first-ever GRAMMY nomination and securing multiple wins at the 2025 ARIA Awards, further solidifying their position as one of Australia’s most important contemporary rock bands. The accolades followed the global success of Cartoon Darkness and a run of sold-out international tours that reaffirmed their reputation as one of the most formidable live acts in modern rock.

On April 30, 2025, U Should Not Be Doing That won APRA Song of the Year — Australia’s top songwriting award — affirming the band’s status as one of the most vital rock acts of their generation.

Amyl and The Sniffers rounded out 2025 by supporting AC/DC on a record-breaking Australian stadium tour — the fastest-selling tour in the country’s history.

“Rock royalty AC/DC ready to pass down crown to Melbourne punk outfit Amyl and the Sniffers,” read a headline in The West Australian. “The nod to the emerging punk rock icons — who have played Glastonbury and Coachella so far this year — has sparked the question of whether AC/DC has nominated their successor to the title of the country’s biggest rock export…In the pub rock genre they are at the top of their game, and certainly the biggest Australia has got to offer.”
